What We Do

Lawrence CDC was incorporated as an Indiana not-for-profit corporation and recognized by the IRS as a 501c3 tax-exempt organization.  We serve the City of Lawrence, the balance of Lawrence Township, and that part of Warren Township generally north of Interstate 70.  Our purposes:

  • To combat decay and deterioration, to preserve and beautify, to stimulate improvement and revitalization, and to stimulate and effect development and redevelopment in our service area;
  • To serve as a positive community focus for all residents, businesses, and community organizations in our service area, for the promotion and implementation of economic development and redevelopment in such areas;
  • To foster and promote rehabilitation and redevelopment of low and moderate income housing in our service area;
  • To cooperate with government, civic and other agencies and bodies in promoting and implementing programs designed to further any of these purposes.

This is a big charter, and we’re working on it!

Our current and planned programs include community collaborations with:

  • Habitat for Humanity, to help new homeowners buy homes in Lawrence;
  • Community Alliance of the Far Eastside (CAFE) to promote quality of life, housing and economic development in our joint service area between I-70 and Pendleton Pike/46th St.;
  • Fort Harrison Reuse Authority, Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Lawrence, to support and encourage economic and housing development in Lawrence through advocacy and planning;
  • Indianapolis-Marion County Department of Metropolitan Development to update the Marion County Land Use Plan; and
  • Lawrence Redevelopment Commission and the City of Lawrence, to improve the Franklin Road and Pendleton Pike commercial corridors and to acquire and turn around vacant and tax-delinquent property throughout Lawrence.

In the past, we provided the first home of Arts for Lawrence and the Lawrence Art Center and helped them grow into the Theater at the Fort.
